A quiet, sunny day on the beach. The guy sitting in a lawn chair reading next to Battle Rock had the right idea.
August 20, 2022 - Skip-Jane-Legacy
It was a gorgeous day to be on the beach. Not much going on, wind went from light to moderate in the course of our visit. The beach looked quite clean and people were behaving themselves.Of note, the...
May 4, 2022 - JaneSkipLegacy

  • Trash on the slope above the beach.
November 6, 2021 - Skip-Jane-Legacy
All in all it was quiet, cloudy weather probably keeping people from visiting - that and there were more action-packed places to see the King Tide in action. We didn't spend too much time because we...

  • Remains of the big bonfire
  • Small Carcass on Port Beach
April 17, 2021 - Skip-Jane-Legacy
Tide was just coming in, and the wet sand area was very clean, but up higher there were a lot of plastics in the process of breaking down - smaller pieces and broken things. Lots of driftwood up high...
  • Hermit Crab at Port Beach, Port of Port Orford
  • Port Beach
January 14, 2021 - JaneSkipLegacy
I saw something that looked like sea pickles on the shore. I have never seen them before. I found out from an episode of Oregon Field Guide tonight that they are Pyrosomes. I guess they are a new...
  • plastic bits in the drift line
  • Pyrosomes

October 16, 2020 - Skip-Jane-Legacy
There was a sea lion carcass on the port side of the beach. It has been there long enough to be partly covered over with sand, smell bad and have maggots spilling from a tear in the belly. We did not...
August 22, 2020 - alaingamerica
A family of six was playing in the surf in the little Cove south of the dock Beach. The actual dock area seems very quiet, although we did see some dredging activity.

March 9, 2013 - Tichenor
The beach was very clean with no dead birds or animals and almost no litter. Dog feces were numerous, as many people ignore the sign at the main entrance to the Dock Beach about picking up after your...

December 18, 2012 - Tichenor
There was a brief "window" of partial sunshine with showers of hail and light rain. Dock Beach was nearly deserted; one man and his enthusiastic dog were walking and exploring driftwood piles. On the...

Quiet day on the beach and the dock
June 20, 2012 - Tichenor

April 3, 2012 - Tichenor
I missed an opportunity when the sun came out late the afternoon of March 18. Due to my busy schedule and the continual intense storms since March 19, I am just over two weeks late with this spring...

December 6, 2011 - Tichenor
Light activity at both Battle Rock and Dock Beach. On the dock people were busy with boats, hoisting boats, or working in the restaurant. Crab pots are stacked, awaiting the signal to start the...
September 19, 2011 - Tichenor
The beach was extremely clean with almost no litter (1 soda pop can, 2 bottle caps). Charred wood, remainders of beach fires, were evident but had not been near piles of driftwood, so were apparently...
June 18, 2011 - Tichenor
Calm weather, calm sea. Several people quietly enjoying the beach in their own ways. The dock seemed busy with several boats out and one coming in while I was there. There seemed to be more live...
March 23, 2011 - Tichenor
This was the first time I have been to the beach since the recent tsunami. Erosion in a couple of places at the top of one beach could have been from those waters. There seemed to be more trash than...

December 3, 2010 - Tichenor
I decided to do my quarterly walk a little early as it was a very pleasant day and low tide. Sky was partly cloudy, air and ocean quite calm. It was a good decision, because it seems as though the...
September 21, 2010 - Tichenor
On this edge-of-autumn afternoon the sea was calm, the beach quite clean with few footprints.Business-as-usual was going on at the dock (fishing boats returning for the night)and people who work at...
June 16, 2010 - Tichenor
A quiet day on the dock and on the beaches. Four people were quietly enjoying the beach at the cove just west of Battle Rock. I was the only person on the dock beach. No dead birds or animals today....

2 people on 2 different sections of beach, one with a dog. Dock very quiet; fishing boats waiting out the storm
  • A large amount of driftwood has accumulated this winter, especially around Battle Rock.

December 10, 2009 - Tichenor
A warm, sunny, calm day at the beach. Most of the people and all but 2 of the cars were on the dock. Crab season is in full swing and the fishers have had good weather since it started December 1....
September 16, 2009 - Tichenor

March 18, 2009 - Tichenor

September 18, 2008 - Tichenor
A typical day at the beach and on the dock. Weather very pleasant (no wind!). The only thing unusual was the large number of jellies on the beach, flat, roughly circular, mostly brown. I counted 57,...
June 6, 2008 - Tichenor
The most unusual factor was the extreme low tide (-2.4). Usually, a lot of people are on the beach at such times, but not today. I did not find one bird carcass in my short "mile" and that seemed...
March 12, 2008 - Tichenor
A very calm day, even at the dock. Empty beach; only a few gulls in the surf.

December 20, 2007 - Tichenor
Although the bird carcasses noted above were of varying ages, I think it likely that most of them were victims of the Dec. 2-3 storm. Several pelicans died in Port Orford during that storm. We have...
September 5, 2007 - Tichenor
Nothing unusual nor of concern
June 16, 2007 - Tichenor
Little activity on the dock; the few people on the beach were there because of the low tide, I think, because you can walk around some of the headlands at very low tide.
