Report Details
Sections of this mile contained quite a bit of debris. Grasses and algae mainly consisted of eelgrass (some even covered in what looks like hatched-out herring roe)split kelp, and graceful coralline algae. A couple different species of sponge was also present. 10 or so hermit crabs, all dead, was entangled in grasses, along with 1 cancer crab and a porcelain crab. Found one live cryptic kelp crab and one live sea angle. Also saw a large dead skate and a dead sea lion.

Number of people: 10. Number of dogs: 2. Walking or running: 10. Other Activities: One lady was picking up trash. Nice evening not many people around.
Notable Wildlife
Lots of debris in sections of this mile. One live female, cryptic kelp crab.
Stranded Marine Mammals
Half of a sea lion around 4th Ave.
Dead Fish or Invertebrates
Dead hermit crabs, cancer crabs, and porcelain crabs. Also a large dead skate. I was unable to flip it over so I am not sure if it was a Big Skate or a Longnose Skate.
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Shells, Wood pieces.
Man-made Modifications
Dune modification/removal. The upper section of the beach is encroaching on the Prom, so the city of Seaside is removing sand from directly in front of the Prom and spreading it out on the lower section of the beach.

Lots of birds observed: Osprey - 2 fishing at mouth of estuary; one adult and one juvenile Adult Bald Eagle resting on north end of Necanicum SpitSnowy Plover flying around estuary island acting distressed with a loose Jack Russel Terrier in the vicinity of Nest 7A

New flock of Brown Pelicans at mouth of estuary along with some Canada Geese, seagulls and Caspian Terns were disturbed several times before relocating to sandbar surrounded by water;Snowy Plover disturbed on island between Necanicum River and Neawanna Creek by two people tidepooling;Tour Helicopter flew over five separate times twice low enough (though probably not illegal) to disturb two Bald Eagles and two Osprey hunting in estuary;Small structure built of driftwood still on the Necanicum Spit being used as shelter;

Beautiful clear day, moderate amount of human activity; two Snowy Plovers seen in newly designated protected areas exhibiting nesting behavior; one harbor seal pup on the rocks of the Necanicum Inlet Island; numerous seagulls and terns along with a few cormoronts; The amount of fireworks debris, burned logs, and styrofoam at the waterline is disheartening.
