Actions & Comments

On our way to conduct a NOAA marine debris survey at the north end of Cove Beach, we saw a peregrine falcon cruise by, an adult bald eagle on the eagle tree, and a sea lion. While the birds were treats to see, the sea lion unfortunately was ill. Perhaps it had leptospirosis which has been reported all along the Oregon coast. The sea lion (female perhaps because of size) had hauled out on the sand, avoiding the incoming waves as much as possible. Two other people were on the beach but luckily they had their dog on leash. We reported the sea lion situation to Jim Rice with the marine mammal stranding network.

Mile 307

Cove Beach north, Arch Cape, Arch Cape Creek

March 14, 2024

The wrack line contained small (2-4") crab casings, clam shells and broken sand dollars. There was a small land slide near a house drain line - see picture. The sand level was low on the north end of mile 307 which leaves the rocks uncovered.
