Report Details

The afternoon low tide -- and mild weather -- on New Year's Eve brought out 40 people (and 3 dogs) on to Cove Beach, mile 306. They were walking, taking photos, crabbing, playing on the sand, and partying around campfires. An unusual sight for Dec 31st.

It was a stunning afternoon, warm-ish, sunny, a holiday. People were thoroughly enjoying being able to be on the beach. A number of residents were partying around campfires. Five people were in wetsuits crabbing. Two were crabbing along the rocky shore which is in the marine reserve. They believed they were in a legal area since they were 5 ft from the rocks -- a misconception. They moved further away after talking with us. We walked the mile on a clear, chilly afternoon. We picked up trash--one full bag. We found a little eel, the same color as brown rockweed! We saw sea foam blowing on the sand. We found a small skull bone. We found a scientific measuring device planted in the cobble with a float saying that it was the property of OSU.
