Report Details

The beach is very flat, extending quite far out to the surf line. The wood is mostly covered, although a few large logs have been washed in recently. If these drift north, those who are going to burn all the logs at the base of NeahKahNie Mountain will have to decide what to do with any new ones. There is a huge number of Velella Velella that have come in on each successive tide, until the current one. These lie in waves stretching up close to the dunes. There were no dead birds, and only a couple of small flocks of shorebirds flying by. No people were on the beach today, and there were not even any dog tracks visible. This mile is part of the section of beach designated as a potential Snowy Plover nesting site and therefore closed to dogs and bikes. People and horses can travel along the beach on the wet sand. It appears that people are mostly respecting this provision with few footprints high on the dunes. There was some human debris, particularly towards the south end of the mile. The restriction on use continues until September and would seem to limit the area of the beach that volunteers would want to sieve to remove plastic particles as is planned for July.

Conditions

Temperature: 55 F. Cloud Cover: Rain. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: NE.

Human Activities

This is one of the areas with restrictions to protect possible nesting Snowy Plovers. It looked like people had been mostly staying on the wet sand as required. There were no dog tracks at all.

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 1.

Notable Wildlife

Only a couple small flocks of shorebirds flying by.

Dead Fish or Invertebrates

Huge numbers of Velella Velella have washed up in waves on the beach. The oldest ones were quite high towards the dunes. There were none along the current surf line.
