Report Details

Apparently, I submitted my spring report one day too early, but the beach was a bit more littered this week than last. The ocean brought some debris in (too bad last week was the SOLV Cleanup) and the spring breakers (now it's Washington's turn) appear to have spent a lot of time on the beach during the week.

Conditions

Temperature: 48 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 7.3 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 52. Number of dogs: 7. Walking or running: 28. Playing in surf: 5. Playing in sand: 1. Sitting: 4. Other Activities: 14 people standing near the water's edge. Spring breakers must have spent a lot of time on the beach this week. There were many more forts, sand structures, and bonfire enclosures than there were just one week ago. The only vehicle allowed on the beach, outside of emergency vehicles, is a police car. They seem to drive on the beach almost every day now.

Concerns

Fire, Litter

Disturbances: Shorebirds moving in response to humans/dogs

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 5. Cars/trucks on beach, allowed: 1.

Notable Wildlife

seagulls

Dead Fish or Invertebrates

very small velella are starting to appear on the beach

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Shells, Small rocks, Styrofoam, Wood pieces. Lots of debris from bonfires (wrappers, bottles and cans) and hard plastic pieces that appear to have been in the ocean.

Actions & Comments

We picked up the bottles and cans left on the beach, but the small plastic pieces and styrofoam were too numerous and small to collect all of it. We'll collect some each day on our walks this week.
