Report Details

Pretty typical Feb. afternoon...24 people and 7 dogs braving the windy & cloudy beach, with rain coming soon.  Recent high tides have left their mark on the dunes and streams.  Modest amount of human debris...the usual aluminum cans, plastic bottles, rope and assorted stuff (one bag was sufficient).  Lots of rocks, shells, sea grass, and small drift wood.  Some new erosion near the Sand Dollar Resaurant.  Public notice signs have been posted by Oregon Parks and Recreation regarding a rip rap revetment application.  At first look, it appears this request could be justified.  Saw about 20'of the remaining "bones" of  the Emily Reed near the Silver Sands Motel.  She was a 215' ship carrying 2,100 tons of coal from Newcastle New South Wales when she ran aground at the Nehalem Bar on Feb 14, 1908...almost 119 years ago...great lumber!  Think the last sighting was in 2010.
