Report Details

It was great to see the large number of SOLV bags loaded and ready for hauling. The volunteers who walked all the way to the jetty deserve kudos. A State Park truck was there collecting bags, but it will take multiple trips.Mile 289 shows no signs of erosion. But there was dune erosion in the middle of the spit.

Conditions

Temperature: 52 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Wind Direction: S. Tide Level: 0.1 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 2. Other Activities: State Park Employees collecting SOLV bags. David and a co-worker from State Parks were in a pickup collecting bags from Saturday's clean up. I spoke to them and they will need to make several trips due to the large amount of trash collected. Good job by SOLV, especially far from an accessible road.

Concerns

Apparent violations: none.

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 7. Cars/trucks on beach, prohibited: 1.

Notable Wildlife

Walked the entire spit. Saw a bald eagle. There were fewer birds than normal on the entire walk.

Beached Birds

On my COASST surveys on the spit, there haven't been many dead birds present this year.

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Shells, Small rocks, Styrofoam, Wood pieces. nothing unusual

Natural Changes

No erosion of 289

Actions & Comments

I walked the entire spit. There is a short section of dune erosion right in the middle of the spit. (mile 287) The 90 degree cut varies from 2 to 6 feet high. This is right in front of the new goat pen established on the spit. Maybe additional development there wouldn't be a wise decision.
