Report Details

Summer arrived and brought very typical late day,  summer weather conditions to Mile 289.  The wind was really strong from the north.  As I crossed the spit from the bay side,  the Tillamook whistle buoy was loud and almost continuous,  a sign of tall wind waves.  But once on the beach,  the only sound was the buffeting of the wind.  I estimate the wind was steady in the mid 20's with gusts into the 30's.  Blowing sand covered all but larger items.  While unpleasant to walk into, the wind is welcomed because it causes the upwelling of ocean water.  That means fish and birds have food.  We also do COASST surveys on the spit,  and very few dead birds are showing up.  Hopefully they are enjoying abudant food this year.

I saw so many different types of birds along the jetty, I'm no bird expert but I thought I saw pelicans, herons, cormorants, and sea gulls.
