Report Details

A beautiful late afternoon fall day. Little debris was evident and no other people were seen. Bright sun and light wind plus some shorebirds foraging in the surf made for an uneventful and relaxing walk on the beach.

Conditions

Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Wind Direction: NW.

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 4.

Notable Wildlife

Observed 13 semi-palmated plovers foraging in the surf.

Actions & Comments

Beach was very clean and lacked the small dunes noted the previous September. Tide was receding during observation period. There was a small amount of debris, most of which I picked up and carried out: bottles from bottled water, a few small pieces of styrofoam, small cans, and so forth. There were a number of large piles of bull kelp. Otherwise, little ocean debris. Birds included the 13 plovers already mentioned, approximately a dozen Western gulls, and five surf scoters actively feeding in the near surf.Wind conditions were unusual. When I arrived the wind was blowing moderately (10-15 mph) from the NW. By the time the sun set, the wind had almost completely died down. As I walked back south on the beach the wind shifted to a light breeze (maybe 5 mph) from the SE. The temperature also seemed to rise, or perhaps it was the absence of a stiffer wind blowing in my face.
