October 22, 2019 - KathyLJ
This was my first trip to this beach in over a week. The rain and high waves caused some minor cliff erosion and the sand is packed up to the cliff.  I removed 21 plastic bottles about half of which...
August 12, 2019 - 222Tender
Beautiful warm, calm day.  Both Wade and Coal creeks quite dry/very little runoff.  25 people 5 dogs all having a great day most walking and getting feet wet!  Some concern about tent/camp on beach...

October 15, 2017 - KathyLJ
While walking along mile 222 on my way to 221, I found a dead sea lion near the high tide line just north of the Moolack Beach parking area.

2016

December 21, 2016 - dderickson
I had to do the survey from two different access points (north at Wade creek, and south near Moolack creek) since a short section of the beach was cut off by high water, north of Coal creek. There...
September 14, 2016 - dderickson
Several types of sea vegetation in drift: Sea palm, Eelgrass, Surfgrass, kelp, Rockweed, feather boa kelp. The sea lion carcass still remains on grate at Wade Creek, and still stinks.Small landslide (...
June 13, 2016 - dderickson
Cloudy with on-and-off light rain; decomposing sea lion still on grate at Wade Creek -- smells pretty rank! Drainpipes currently visible: 19 intact in bluff, 5 pipe only (no casing), 1 casing on...
April 1, 2016 - dderickson
Some portions of the beach are now exposed rock from the bluff to the shoreline, thanks to El Nino. I love observing the variations over the course of the year; I don't think there has been this much...

2015

December 4, 2015 - dderickson
Mild day, mostly cloudy with a few scattered showers while I was on the beach. The surf was high, although the wind was not. The rock shelves are beginning to reappear from under the sand -- as...
September 22, 2015 - dderickson
Beautiful last day of summer, lots of people out, more rock hunters than usual... very high sand, though no dunes except for one short area where sand has bermed up at base of foredune.
June 20, 2015 - dderickson
Sand is building up on high zone; still evidence of dessicated Velella velella; vehicle tracks on sand; monkeyflower growing on bluffs; driftwood fort with a missing dog poster (photo attached).
April 12, 2015 - dderickson
The most outstanding features of this survey were the large amounts of washed-up By-the-wind sailors (Velella velella) in all the drift lines between the water's edge and the bluff, and the large...
February 14, 2015 - dderickson
It was a beautiful, mild but windy, sunny day. I counted the largest number of people and dogs that I have seen since adopting this mile. A Bald eagle was circling over the beach. The beach was very...
  • Five pipes visible in bluff, one on ground. Slide activity has presumably knocked down and buried what was previously there (Eight pipes on 2/19/13).
  • One bare pipe. (Previously six bare pipes and one fallen casing.)
  • Eight bare pipes, one empty casing in bluff, three pipes on ground.
  • Three intact (both pipe and casing) in bluff, two on ground (eight in bluff on 2/19/15).
  • Ten intact in bluff (same as 2/19/13), no evidence of slide.

2014

December 2, 2014 - dderickson
As in a previous report, I have cataloged the sets of drainpipes into five sets. There was some change from my last visit. In the second group from the south, where I originally reported eight,...
November 16, 2014 - Batthecat
Took a walk on the "fossil" beach (between Coal and Wade Creeks) Sunday and came upon the pipes and the giant pile of ropes. Who should know about the rope pile? SOLVE? Presume people already know...
  • Pipes and pieces of pipes - leftover from? Can they be removed?
September 3, 2014 - dderickson
New bull kelp and surf grass is washing up, lots of old surf grass in the drift line; the sand is piled up, covering the rock formations, and actually diverting the outflow of Wade Creek to the south...
  • This bird was lying on its back. I turned it over and it tried to scoot away, but was unable to fly or run.
  • Probably a harbor seal: skeleton parts and fur
June 20, 2014 - dderickson
No significant changes in the natural appearance of the beach and bluffs. There were a lot of small rocks covering the beach in areas on the south half, and still a lot of sand cover over the...
May 6, 2014 - Volunteer Coordinator
Catching up on all the photos that were emailed to me. Here is a group picture of debris we picked up on the beach at Coal Creek today, 5/6/2014, about 2 p.m., just north of Moolack beach. I've also...

I first attempted to do this survey on 4/18/14 at at 4-5' tide, since I have previously been able to access the entire mile at up to 6'. But it was impassable due to high water, whatever the cause(s...
February 25, 2014 - dderickson
It was a beautiful mild sunny day at low tide. There is still very much sand cover, although the tops of some of the rock formations are showing. Very few birds present, and surprisingly few people...

2013

December 21, 2013 - dderickson
Beautiful Christmas Eve day. No major changes; still lots of sand covering rock formations.
  • This photo was taken on 12/23/12
  • This photo was taken a year later -- still covered in sand.
November 8, 2013 - dderickson
Since it was high tide, I was unable to walk the whole mile; also, that gave me a new perspective of the beach. The sand is bermed up close to the bluff. Another one of the drainpipe casings in the...
September 19, 2013 - dderickson
Last sunny day of summer, warm and not windy, lots of people out. The beach is pretty clean as far as trash and debris is concerned. A lot of comb jellies along the tide line. Several cairns erected...

May 1, 2013 - dderickson
Beautiful, bright day with brisk northern wind; very few people on the beach, and the ones I counted weren't there long. Significant sand cover has moved back on to the beach (this is my first year...
March 27, 2013 - dderickson
Nothing new to report, other than the constant shifting of sand and rock appearance. There was a scattering/drift of long-stem yellow roses along the high driftline in the section between Wade Creek...
February 19, 2013 - dderickson
The sand is back, particularly on the northern end of the mile. Unfortunately, my hard drive crashed and I have lost my reference pictures, so will have to begin anew. The beach looked relatively...
January 11, 2013 - dderickson
Sun and light breeze made for a good opportunity to get out on the beach. Three wood pallets, including a red "PECO" were in the high zone, as well as a large amount of styrofoam, small pieces of...
  • This photo was taken the day of this survey (1/11/13).
  • I tried to show the size of the boulders by including myself in a picture next to one. I am 5'7"

2012

December 9, 2012 - dderickson
Drizzly but mild day; light breeze at about 8 mph. Very few people out, no dogs, but there were dog tracks. Very sparse wrack; debris in the high zone was mostly lumber, plastic bottles, and chunks...
November 7, 2012 - dderickson
A good break in the rainy/foggy weather to get out for a survey. A lot of sand cover: many of the previously existing rock beds are covered along the base of the bluffs. Driftline wrack was very...
  • The pipe structure to the right of the set has broken off.
October 9, 2012 - dderickson
Beautiful mild day, perhaps one of the last of the season; no outstanding changes in appearance of the beach or bluffs, although the rock formations visible at mean tide last spring are no longer...
September 17, 2012 - dderickson
Beautiful day, light breeze from ssw; not too many people on beach. Minimal debris (someone must be doing a good job of picking up unless the sand is covering it up) other than a few pieces of lumber...
August 15, 2012 - dderickson
I stated the cloud cover was fog, but it was very light with the sun mostly visible, and blue sky to the east! There was more contour to the sand than in last couple of months, probably due to the...
July 6, 2012 - dderickson
Beautiful day, light breeze, gentle surf...There was not too much debris on the beach other than numerous small foam pieces (mostly brown, white, and light blue), and one larger, about 18"x18"x4";...
June 13, 2012 - dderickson
This was my first survey of mile 222. Overall, the beach was clean, except for many pieces of foam, and several plastic bottles. I didn't see any signs of recent landscape changes. About 18-20 people...

2009

August 27, 2009 - hatsmith
The day I was there was mild, calm, almost no wind and slightly humid. Fog did not burn off during time I checked, but I was driving north and noticed fog did not burn off until I was into Tillamook...
July 27, 2009 - hatsmith
Beautiful day. Hot in Portland, but not too bad in Newport, Lincoln City. Lovely! Noticed some erosion, no dead birds, much seaweed and kelp on beach.
February 4, 2009 - hatsmith
It was my second time visiting mile 222. It was a gorgeous day and 63 degrees. People I encountered were enjoying the day walking their dogs. There was an exposed old tree root from a Spruce tree...

June 7, 2008 - CoastalKaren
More erosion noted in bluffs. Not much litter on beach, a rather quiet day.

2007

November 24, 2007 - CoastalKaren
Nothing exciting to report, it was a great afternoon for a stroll on my mile. The erosion continues around the construction by Beverly Beach.
August 12, 2007 - CoastalKaren
There were no reportable changes on the walk. Things have remained the same as they were a few months ago. There is still some erosion close to Beverly Beach, but it hasn't gotten any worse. All...
May 19, 2007 - CoastalKaren
It was a beautiful day to walk my mile. Slightly overcast, but still, very nice. Am slightly concerned with the erosion along Highway 101. Since the construction started, near Beverly Beach, it...
