The sand is starting to wash away and some rocks that haven't been seen since July are beginning to reappear. The large kelp tangles of a couple weeks ago are gone and there was not much in the...
July 21, 2019 - KathyLJ
It was a beautiful, sunny day with no wind and a very low incoming tide. Of the 22 people observed, 20 were walking and 2 were surf fishing. I observed 2 dogs: 1 leashed, 1 unleashed. No picnic...

I accessed the beach from NW 68th St which is just south of Schooner Point and the southern end of mile 221. Soil erosion on the trail down to the beach on the north end of the mile by Moolack Creek...
June 30, 2018 - lipberm
There was nothing startling or unusual about this beachwalk except that we noted significant destruction of a staircase and its foundation below the large vacation rentals just south of Moolack Beach...
June 15, 2018 - KathyLJ
No notable changes to the beach or cliffs since my last report. Minimal trash and no large pieces of debris although Parks staff had been there on an ATV a couple days earlier so they would have...

October 15, 2017 - KathyLJ
38 is a large number of people on this section of beach for any time of year but it was a sunny, windless day so it was perfect for beach walking. Most of the people were at the south end of the...
June 29, 2017 - KathyLJ
No notable cliff erosion over the winter. Removed minimal debris from sandy areas and in driftwood including food wrappers, a kite and fragments that appeared to be from a foam fishing float. More...

October 27, 2016 - KathyLJ
Not much change since the last report except waves & tides have removed sand and exposed some rocks not visible during the summer. Also, more large driftwood trees and logs along the cliffs than...
August 22, 2016 - KathyLJ
Noticed this apparatus hanging from cliff below Pacific Surf RV Park.
August 21, 2016 - KathyLJ
Beach was relatively clean of seaweed/algae, molt, etc. There is a drain hose tangled in some downed trees below a housing development near Schooner Point. It looks like it's been there for awhile.

Saw a lot of fresh dead birds (15 or so) - Cassin's auklets? Saw a bunch more the next day at Beverly Beach. Took photos of many of them: https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/sets/...
June 11, 2014 - lauraj
This was a quick walk, intended to gather more debris, but as it goes the beach was mostly clear this time. More rock shelves have been exposed and even some small tide pools. Most notable was the...
January 17, 2014 - lauraj
One of those wonderful summery days in winter! Mostly sunny with an east wind about 62 degrees. 8 to 10 people out walking, 1 dog.Not many birds, 1 flock of gulls, 1 dead (unknown species).Erosion in...

Another beautiful (but windy) afternoon on our amazing coast. Pleased to see only a little trash as I had decided to allow myself to walk barefoot and didn't want to scramble into the rocks. Still...

October 25, 2012 - lauraj
Very pleasant day for a walk. The beach was fairly clean of trash, but someone dropped an upholstered chair and a mattress, among other things, in the Moolack parking lot. URG! Minimal amount of new...

Beautiful day. Hauled off as much trash as we could carry. Typical trash, nothing unusual. UpdateJapanese light bulb. While belatedly posting photos (most of which document the active erosion in this...

It was a beautiful day between storms. Some big piles of sea foam south of Moolack parking lot. Large flock of Gulls hanging out near Moolack creek drainage. 6 - 8 people collecting fossils and...

April 16, 2010 - lipberm
When we left Newport on March 15, there was plenty of sand on Mile 221's beach, including the area directly below where we live, Schooner Point. When we returned a month later we found the beach...

December 12, 2009 - lipberm
A gloomy day with virtually no human activity on the beach except for a couple of young men practicing their golf swings with a practice ball at Schooner Point. Looks to us as though very little sand...
September 22, 2009 - lipberm
A lovely warm, windless, but slightly foggy morning with few people at low tide. The track down to the beach on the Moolack Beach end shows recent erosion.
May 28, 2009 - lipberm
A beautiful morning on mile 221. Not many people or dogs for such a nice day and low tide. Noticed a "for sale" sign at our normal access point just south of the Moolack Beach parking area. Maybe...
March 6, 2009 - lipberm
An absolutely beautiful, sunny, calm Friday afternoon drew an unusual number of people to Mile 221. Workers were busy repairing the wooden stairway leading down from the two rental houses south of...

December 11, 2008 - lipberm
At the Moolack end of the mile there was an unusually high concentration of small plastic and styrofoam pieces in the wrack line and on the rocks. Lots of bottlecaps, lighters, and a few toothbrushes...
November 22, 2008 - malachite
Sighting of an unusually large (10 for sure, possibly as many as 13-14) black oystercatchers, in addition to possible sighting of bald eagle & some Black Turnstones. Oystercatchers probably...
September 20, 2008 - lipberm
Lots of human and good-dog activity on this sunny, mild fall beach clean-up day. There was some new erosion of the bluff--one large tree tipped over and erosion due to disturbance made in bluff at a...
June 11, 2008 - lipberm
The unusually low tides had more than the normal beachwalkers out today. The Dogami geologist (Jonathan Allen) told us that about 70% of the sand had already returned to our mile.
January 17, 2008 - lipberm
Another beautiful day on our mile. A little cool, but no wind. I believe there is the least amount of sand remaining on the beach that we have ever seen. Our neighbor noted that the waves are now...

October 27, 2007 - coastwalker221
Saw ten people & one dog off-leash enjoying themselves. Very nice mile of beach, nearly empty of human litter. New evidence of continual beach bluff erosion on Mile 221 on the Moolack Slide...
August 31, 2007 - lipberm
In addition to the new RV pads, there is some erosion control going in on the next mile to the south (220). The Schooner Landing motel has brought in drilling and other equipment to try to control...
August 8, 2007 - B Berge
No activities of concern. Many seabirds on the ocean, none on the beach. No dead wildlife. Moolack was clean and I did not see anything of concern.
May 5, 2007 - lipberm
One peeled log observed (and photographed), probably from the dumped load. Full set of photos taken at the standard 29 points along the mile.
March 13, 2007 - B Berge
Not much in the way human-derived debris - the beach was really quite clean. In general there were a lot more beach rocks are exposed then when I was there last. That's it. It should be noted that...
February 4, 2007 - coastwalker221
Low levels of sand piling over all areas except Schooner Point. Beach rack line is typically several yards westward of average summer lines, indicating ocean waves are not flowing as high on the...

December 28, 2006 - lipberm
A mild, magical day in between storms, and our first realization of just how much sand is moved onto and off of the beach below Schooner Point as the seasons and prevailing winds change. Closer...
