Report Details

The dunes on the beach have now been erased, and there is a wide expanse of beach at low tide, much of it wet today. There were huge clumps of kelp and smaller swirls of seagrass tangled with marine debris. There was no one at all on the Agate Beach end of my mile; I saw only 17 people on the Nye Beach half of the walk. There was a surprising amount of debris (can and bottles, plastic lids and bags, other larger bits of plastic) considering the beach cleanup had just been held. There was no wildlife other than gulls.Note: This report covers a little more than a mile. It runs from Agate Beach Wayside all the way to Nye Beach Turnaround.

Human Activities

Number of people: 17. Number of dogs: 3. Walking or running: 14. Playing in surf: 3. There were no people at the Agate Beach end of my mile. I saw only four between Agate Beach and Jumpoff Joe. I have never seen the beach so empty of people and dogs in the daytime when there was no rain.

Concerns

Apparent violations: footprints on sandy bluffs.

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 17.

Notable Wildlife

I saw 19 gulls on the beach and maybe another 15-20 perched around at the Nye Beach turnaround. There were no other birds.

Dead Fish or Invertebrates

I saw one small piece of jelly, clear in color, with nothing to aid identification.

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Shells, Small rocks, Wood pieces.
