Today was a beautiful, sunny day with a moderate east wind. There were people walking, running, sitting in the sun, and bike riding on the beach. There was a live stranded California sea lion on the beach with signs already posted by the Marine Mammal Stranding Network on either side of the animal. There were many large wracks of kelp with attached holdfasts on the beach. There were also many (12) dead fulmars washed ashore.

Temperature: 48 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Wind Direction: E. Tide Level: 4.0 feet.

Number of people: 29. Number of dogs: 7. Walking or running: 18. Playing in sand: 4. Sitting: 2. Photography: 1. Other Activities: 2. People were walking up to the see the sea lion stranded on the beach, but they were staying far enough away that the sea lion did not go back into the water. He did raise his head and look however. People were really good about keeping their dogs away from the sea lion.

Apparent violations: people getting close to live sick Zalophus with signs posted.

Disturbances: Disturbance/harassment of marine mammals

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 15. 12 Northern Fulmars; 1 Rhino Auklet; 1 Common Murre; 1 Gull sp.

A large swath of the bluff is well vegetated with shore pines, willow and native shrubs like silverweed, and black twinberry.
