Mile 217 - Newport, Nye Beach north, Agate Beach south - December 25, 2009

Report Details

The beach was wide, wet and flat; it was obviously windswept. It was a clear, sunny, and pleasant early winter day; the wind was only moderate, but it blew beautiful plumes of spray from the tops of the breakers. People (sometimes with their dogs) were walking the beach and using it responsibly. Thre was an unfortunate amount of land-based refuse, such as water bottles, plastic bags, foil juice b ags, cardboard, gum wrappers, and a spray can. There were some larger rocks (the size of a man's fist to the size of a football) than I had been seeing in the fall. I could see where sand had been coming down the bluffs, and the sedimentary rocks, where there were some, were still breaking off in chunks.

Number of people: 53. Number of dogs: 13. Walking or running: 48. Surfing: 3. Other Activities: sail buggy, 2. I saw one sail buggy (not motorized). People seemed mostly to be walking and enjoying the beautiful day.

Notable Wildlife

There were five large jellies stranded on my mile; they were in poor condition and looked as if they had been there for some time.

Natural Changes

There is sedentary rock erosion on the bluffs near Jumpoff Joe, and there is more sand coming down from sandy bluffs.
