Report Details
Several stranded jellies and ctenophores, plus a 24" section of the tail end of a robust club-hook squid.
Conditions
Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Wind Direction: NW. Tide Level: 4.5 feet.
Notable Wildlife
Found a rear portion of the body of a "giant" squid, probably a robust hook-clubbed squid (Moroteuthis robusta) washed up on the beach just north of Yaquina Bay State Park. The segment was about 23" long, dark reddish-purple in color. Rough calculations based on the span of the fins suggest that the living animal may have had a dorsal mantle length on the order of 3.4' and a total length, including arms, of 6.4'. These are _very_ rough calculations, however.
Dead Fish or Invertebrates
Unusual concentration. Several moon jellies (Aurelia labiata); a small ctenophore (comb-jelly), probably a sea gooseberry (Pleurobrachia bachei); and a small (~4 cm) roughly spherical jelly with short tentacles, possibly a penicillate jelly (Polyorchis penicillatus)
