Report Details

Interesting foredune undercutting or erosion present on one section of the beach. Associated with more (than average for this beach) steeply sloping beach & cobble sized sediment (if that's the correct term) in intertidal area.

Conditions

Temperature: 45 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Wind Direction: NW.

Human Activities

Number of people: 5. Number of dogs: 2. Walking or running: 5. 2 motor vehicles parked out on jetty--which is, according to a sign posted further inland--illegal. Jetty is under jurisdiction of the Army Corp of Engineers who, when telephoned, confirmed illegality of driving onto & parking on jetty.

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 6.

Notable Wildlife

Saw what looked like over 20 curlews or whimbrels (no binocs, not a great birder)

Driftline Content

Styrofoam.

Natural Changes

undercutting of foredune

Actions & Comments

Interesting undercutting of foredune. It's happening lower down on the beach slope (towards the ocean/west) than occurred during the high energy winter of 1996 (or was it 1997? Somewhere I have slides of what the beach looked like that winter). Nice exposures of bedding, including some cross bedding & bedding w/lighter to darker particle/minerals grading upwards. Two areas of beach seemed more steeply sloping than usual (that I recall seeing at this time of year) w/accompanying greater number of well rounded cobble-sized sediment. All seem to be indicative of high energy beach along one section of SB state park beach--fairly close to pedestrian access of day use area parking lot & walking north. Beach to south looked average.
