Mile 212 - Holiday Beach north, Moore Creek, Grant Creek - November 24, 2017

Report Details

Nice late fall day and several goups enjoying the beach. Lots of bull kelp and interesting organisms on the beach. Some sort of egg sacks possibly. A few birds but a fair number of people and high tide so not a lot of room for them.

Conditions

Temperature: 55 F. Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: SW. Tide Level: 8.0 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 10. Number of dogs: 6. Walking or running: 8.

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt). A large number of what appeared to be either egg sacks or possibly sea cucumbers. Found a large piece of fish net in Moore Creek and was unable to remove it on my own. I will call the Beach Ranger on Monday.

New Development

Bluff development, Drainage pipes.

Actions & Comments

I havn't taken action but on-going work on the bluff at one property was completed. This involved the installation of sheet piles, drainage work on behind the bluff, back filling, a catch basin and a new drainage pipe. State Parks also requested the landowner remove a delapidated stairway that extended to a concrete platform on the beach. All of this structure was removed and the backfilled area was planted.

A new house is being built just south of Grant Creek near an unstable portion of the bluff (picture attached). A new railing installed along a section of riprap (picture attached). A large rock field is exposed along this section (picture attached). Several small slide/slough areas apparent associated with the rains earlier in the month.
