Report Details

The contour of the beach has changed again so that there are numerous patches of standing water at the base of the embankment.  Despite this, and despite the increased amount of trash, it is still a lovely and relatively unfrequented beach.  The embankment continues to show signs of ongoing boulder falls and other erosion.

Conditions

Cloud Cover: Sunny. Tide Level: 2.4 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 24. Number of dogs: 8. Walking or running: 23. Other Activities: Bicycling 1. People enjoying the beach on a sunny morning.

Cars/trucks parking: 10.

Notable Wildlife

crows, gulls

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 4. All the dead birds were so scavenged that I could not identify them. See photos of 2 of them attached.

Dead Fish or Invertebrates

n/a

Driftline Content

Small rocks, Seaweeds and seagrass, Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces, Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Styrofoam, Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.). Mile 211 is often nearly free of plastic and other trash, but on 9/19 an unexpectedly and depressingly large amount of trash littered the beach, including small plastic and foam pieces, plastic bottles, cigarette filter tips, and a beer can, among other debris.

New Development

Drainage pipes. As of last report, three properties north of Thiele Creek had drainpipes running from the embankment down to the beach. On 9/19 only northernmost of these properties (44.568832, -124.070258) still had drainpipes, but the number of drainpipes on this property had increased from two to four. One was embedded in the embankment with only the end protruding. See attached photo.

Natural Changes

Landslides/major boulder falls.

I tried to pick up and carry back to trash collection area all plastic pieces I found larger than 1 square inch, but for every piece I picked up there were at least 100 smaller pieces, a great increase over the amount of plastic just a few years ago.
