Mile 176 Report
North end Baker Beach, Lily Lake
May 26, 2007
First report, no significant human damage to area, other then the horse trail over the dunes and on the land side paralleling the dunes.
Report Details
First report, no significant human damage to area, other then the horse trail over the dunes and on the land side paralleling the dunes. The amount of drifting sand appeared unusual to me, but my experience with this beach it very limited. It appears that the loose sand along the horse trail and over the dunes, and the distance to the beach from the access point discourages most visitors.
Conditions
Temperature: 65 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Wind Direction: NW. Tide Level: 0.7 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 14. Photography: 4. Other Activities: Horse riding. Late in the day, because of the wind and drifting sand, it was "uncomfortable" to travel over the dunes, onto the beach, from the Baker Beach access point and parking lot.
Vehicles
Notable Wildlife
Many gulls, barely disturbed by my running along the beach or by the horse riders.
Driftline Content
Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Shells.
Actions & Comments
Recent heavy drifting sand and dunes obscured Baker Beach trail to parking lot. Though new to the area I've been at Baker enough that I should have recognized the exit, but without my GPS I would have found it difficult to discover the exit, or having found the place made it over the new dunes to the horse trail.

I do hope ODOT finally does something about the fissures and erosion immediately west of 101, just north of the entrance to the Southview PUD housing, because if, during our winter rains, that section of 101 slides off, it will close this highway for many months while emergency repairs are undertaken.

Some quads recently crossed over Berry Creek from the south, not Forest Service and the Forest Service had a pickup truck north of Berry Creek during the past three months as well.
