Report Details

The Siuslaw River north and south jetty areas are generally clean and in good shape.  Many people recreate in these areas, even on an overcast weekday such as February 4.  The appropriate authorities should perhaps monitor the south jetty area more closely for people using chainsaws to cut driftwood and spraypainting graffiti.

Conditions

Temperature: 48 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: S. Tide Level: 5.0 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 14. Number of dogs: 4. Walking or running: 10. Photography: 2. Surfing: 2. Fishing: 2. Other Activities: Several people were birdwatching in the south jetty area, using large spotting scopes.. There were several sets of recent tire tracks on the beach in the south jetty area, continuing south into Mile 169. It was not clear whether this is prohibited activity.

Concerns

Driftwood removal

Apparent violations: In the south jetty area, someone was cutting large driftwood logs with a chainsaw and apparently taking away pieces. See photo. This seems to have happened within the previous few days. There were several driftwood structures in both the north and south jetty areas. In the south jetty area, there is considerable graffiti spraypainted on a large rock near the jetty. See photo..

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 14.

Beached Birds

There were numerous gulls, a few cormorants, and an osprey flying over the Siuslaw River. There was a sea lion or harbor seal swimming in the Siuslaw river, near the north jetty.

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Shells, Wood pieces. There is a great deal of driftwood in both the north and south jetty areas, including some pushed well up into the dunes overlooking the beach. See photos. Otherwise the beach in both areas is quite clear of human debris.

Actions & Comments

The south jetty parking area and the road from there to the beach are very badly potholed, making them impassable in places to a standard sedan.
