After a week of heavy rain, it was a lovely sunny January day at the South Cove.

After a week of heavy rain, it was a lovely sunny January day at the South Cove. The rains softened the trail up enough to form foot "steps" down to the beach. A couple saw some land slide, said "it wasn't bad", but they did decide to relocate their picnic. I did not see a lot of wildlife, nor did I find the carcass of the beached sea lion I saw last time. I wanted to see how the cove was impacted by the king tide series, and expected to find lots of plastic litter. There was an increase, but not as much as I expected. I collected very little, as I am convalescing from a recent rib injury, but the couple I shared the beach with filled a plastic grocery sack and said there was more they couldn't fit in the bag. I did note some erosion below a tree along side the access trail that may have shifted a bit.

Temperature: 47 F. Tide Level: 2.7 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 2. Walking or running: 2. Two people and myself for the duration of the survey, however another car with 2 passengers pulled up as I was leaving.

Cars/trucks parking: 2.
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass. Some Styrofoam and other litter in the driftwood that masses at the very high tide line.
Natural Changes
Landslides/major boulder falls, Visible retreat of solid bluff. Recent rains made the trail soft enough for "steps" to form at the bottom of the access trail. The couple sharing the beach with me were planning to have a picnic at the waterfall, but a small landslide prompted a retreat to the top of the trail.

There was a beach hazard statement issued and I wanted to see what impact that would have as we were experiencing the first fine weather after so many weeks of cold rain. I was charmed by a family of six playing on the beach, the children even playing in the water.

A minus tide occurs this Summer weekend and Parks had a sign encouraging the public to explore the tidepools.
