Mile 101 - Face Rock, Bandon Beach, Coquille Point - October 3, 2010

Report Details

Nice partly sunny October day, winds maybe 10 mph, consequently 21 people were out, mostly walking. Eight (8) dogs, all but one unleashed, few under control. Numerous structures built with driftwood. Evidence of one fire in a driftwood pile near bluff grass and gorse. One person on horseback. Clear, brown jellyfish (4-7 inches in diameter, with short tentacles) were numerous in the wrackline. Sea palm kelp were prevalent also. Six dead birds found (Common Murre -2, Pelagic Cormorant, Brandt's Cormorant, Western Gull -2).

Number of people: 21. Number of dogs: 8. Walking or running: 20. Other Activities: 1. One horseback riding. All but one dog was unleashed. Few were under adequate control of the owners.

Apparent violations: Fire in driftwood piles.

Notable Wildlife

Lots of sea palm kelp, some bull kelp in wrackline

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 6. Pelagic Cormorant, Brand't Cormorant, Western Gull (2), Common Murre (1 adult, 1 juvenile)

Dead Fish or Invertebrates

Unusual concentration. Jelly fish, partly brown, circular about 4-7 inches in diameter, with brown 1-inch tentacles at the edge. (first observance of this type for me)

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Shells, Wood pieces.
