Report Details

We were attracted to the mile because we saw hundreds of birds taking flight at once only to discover when we got to the edge of the overlook that two separate individuals were approaching a still large flock of Brown Pelican and gulls resting on the beach. In all they scattered 2/3rds of the flock that could have originally numbered 1000 birds. The offshore rocks at Mile 101 are very crowded with them.

Conditions

Temperature: 50 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: -0.5 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 2. Walking or running: 2. We observed a large number of birds in flight and approached the beach overlook. Two individuals, walking separately, were continuing to approach a large flock of Brown Pelicans and gulls (est. 400-600 birds) resting on the beach. They caused more than half of the remainder to take flight.

Concerns

Disturbances: Shorebirds moving in response to humans/dogs

Notable Wildlife

Very large flock of Brown Pelicans and gulls (est. 400-600 birds) resting on the beach at Johnson Creek at the south of the mile. The flock stretched north for 100 yards. [A second similar flock was south in Mile 99 between Haystack Rock and Johnson Creek.
