Author Jonathan White, who is also a sailor, surfer, and marine conservationist, will discuss his new book, “Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean,” in a special literary event at Manzanita’s Hoffman Center for the Arts (594 Laneda Ave.).  Doors open at 6:30 p.m.  The reading will be followed by a Q & A session and then an Open Mic period for which the suggested theme is “Not Your Usual Ocean Story.”  Admission is $7.

White spent seven year researching the complex topic of tides, exploring the science behind the phenomenon, but also history, myth, and ocean lore.  His book touches on such recent tidal subjects as sea level rise due to climate change, and tidal generation of electricity.  White, who has an MFA in creative nonfiction, is the founder and former director of the Resource Institute in Seattle.
