Talk on Resident Gray Whales
On Thursday, Jan. 5 at 6:30 p.m., the Midcoast Watersheds Council's community meeting will focus on the gray whales that call the Oregon coast home year-round.
The featured speaker is Lisa Hildebrand, a PhD student at Oregon State University's (OSU) Marine Mammal Institute. Hildebrand's research focuses on marine mammals' ecology and population dynamics in the context of prey availability and environmental conditions.
About the talk:
"As gray whales head north for the summer, a small group of them stick around the Oregon coast rather than heading all the way up to the Arctic, making places like Depoe Bay renowned for whale watching. Scientists from OSU have been researching which whales cut the migration short, how they use habitats present off our coast, and why they might be doing this."
