Ed Kerns, former logger turned environmental activist, will speak in Astoria on Thursday, Sept. 19, 6 p.m. (doors open at 5:30), in Columbia Hall, Room 219, at Clatsop Community College (1651 Lexington Ave.). The event, free and open to all, is sponsored by Astoria’s CREATE and the Forest Visions Project.

Kerns will speak on “Create Forests:  A Community Grassroots Restoration Project.”  Kerns organized a project to transform a decommissioned railroad track in to an award-winning restoration project, replacing invasive species with native trees and plants.  He will discuss this project as a model for developing new, diversified forests on public lands and mitigating the effects of climate change.
