Bob Bailey, president of the Elakha Alliance, will speak on “Sea Otters in Oregon” on Thursday, Oct. 17, 7 p.m., in the Port Orford Public Library (1421 Oregon St.).  The talk is free and open to all.

Bailey, a former Oregon Shores board member and retired head of the state’s Coastal Management Program, will speak on the history, ecological and cultural importance of sea otters and prospects for their recovery. The Elakha Alliance works to promote sea otter research that could lead to a restoration effort.  (Oregon Shores was a founding member of the Alliance.)

Sea otters are extinct on the Oregon coast, having been eliminated by hunting for their fur, although occasional visitors, presumably coming down from Washington, are seen here.
