Newport residents JoAnn and Bill Barton will present “Protecting a Sacred Space:  The Vision for the New Yakona Nature Preserve” to the Yaquina Birders & Naturalists at their meeting on Thursday, Oct. 17, 7 p.m. at the OSU Extension Lincoln County office (1211 S.E. Bay Blvd.) in Newport.  The event is free and open to the public.

The Yakona Nature Preserve is a 170-acre sanctuary that contains a stunning Sitka spruce forest.  The Bartons will introduce the sanctuary in this presentation and describe the history of its formation. The Yakona Preserve was created as a forest sanctuary on Yaquina Bay.  It includes hiking trails and viewpoints freely accessible to people of all abilities and offers opportunities to learn about resident wildlife and cultural history, and to serve as a living laboratory of coastal ecosystems.
