On Dec. 12 and 13, the Pacific Northwest Consortium on Plastics is holding their annual conference in Newport. The event will take place at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in the Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building (2030 SE Marine Science Drive).

The Consortium brings together scientists, regulators, and community coalitions throuhgout the Pacifc Northwest to compile data on ocean plastics. This data helps inform regional understanding of the prevelance of plastic in the area, the transport through the environment, observable breakdown, and effects on aquatic species. This information is used to support policy and decision making. The social and environmental problem of plastics in the environment is of critical concern, so the Consortium exists to aid in public education using direct research about the hazards of plastic at the micro and nano level.

Join the conference to hear from experts about the science, monitoring, policy, and science communication behind plastic research in aquatic environments. There will also be a poster session Monday night for those interested in sharing their research.

Registration is $50 (free for students, postdocs, and speakers) and the deadline is Nov. 30. For more information on the agenda, lodging, and to register, go here.
