CoastWatch Orientation--South Coast
A CoastWatch orientation beachwalk will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Harris Beach State Park just north of Brookings, beginning at 10 a.m. Harris Beach State Park is also one of Oregon’s eight Marine Education Areas (previously called Marine Gardens).
This will be a chance for new CoastWatchers to brush up on their observational skills, longer-term mile adopters to get a refresher course, and the CoastWatch-curious to learn about the program. All are welcome to this free event, but registration is required.
The guide for this event is naturalist, veteran ecotour leader, and CoastWatch friend Marty Giles. She will share information about CoastWatch: what to observe while walking a mile, what to bring along, how to fill out a CoastWatch report, and which citizen and community science projects are available to volunteers in the area. She will discuss shoreline natural history and much more about the Oregon coastline.
Harris Beach Park is at the north end of Brookings, off Highway 101. This is CoastWatch Mile 8. Please dress for the weather and bring water and snacks. While the event is slated to last 90 minutes, it may last longer (feel free to peel off when you need to). Park here, at the main beach parking area below the campground. We’ll assemble at the top of the ramp near the interpretive signs.
