CoastWatch joins NAME to present ‘Sharing The Coast’
The time has almost arrived for our wide-ranging, jam-packed and somewhat experimental “Sharing the Coast Conference,” coming up August 15-17 at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. Together with our co-sponsors, the Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators (NAME), we have designed an event devoted not only to learning about coastal and ocean natural history, but to sharing it with others (hence the title).
The talks and workshops are intended as training for CoastWatchers, along with teachers and interpreters who belong to NAME, but will also be of interest to anyone who loves to learn about the coast and ocean.
The event is open to the public—please invite others who might be interested. Talks on Friday evening and Saturday in the HMSC auditorium are free. There will be a $30 charge ($15 for CoastWatch or NAME members) to participate in workshops and a reception Saturday afternoon, and field trips on Sunday.
“Sharing the Coast” includes a number of notable features, ranging from a talk by an internationally renowned oceanographer, to an opportunity to spend the night and learn at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, to a “Flotsam and Jetsam Scavenger Hunt.”
Oceanographer John McGowan opens the conference Friday evening, August 15. Dr. McGowan will speak on the “State of the Oceans” at 7 p.m. in the HMSC auditorium. Other speakers include marine educator Marty Giles on beach ecology, Sea Grant biologist Sam Chan on invasive species, and author Skye Moody on beachcombing as a way to learn about the ocean.
Numerous workshops on topics from climate change and tsunamis to tidepool ecology and teaching marine science take place on Saturday afternoon, followed by a reception at the Rogue Brewery. Sunday includes a number of field trips, including a tidepool walk and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Oregon Coast Aquarium, plus a special marine debris scavenger hunt led by Skye Moody.
For a complete schedule of events, go HERE. To pre-register for the conference (optional), download, print, and fill out the Registration Form, and mail it to the address at the bottom of the Form. For more information, contact Fawn Custer, (541) 867-0329.
