24 REPORTS FOR MILE 49:
Tichenor
Mar 9, 2013 4:00 PM

The beach was very clean with no dead birds or animals and almost no litter. Dog feces were numerous, as many people ignore the sign at the main entrance to the Dock Beach about picking up after your animals. A variety of people, including several children, were enjoying the beautiful day on the beach.   MORE

There was a brief "window" of partial sunshine with showers of hail and light rain. Dock Beach was nearly deserted; one man and his enthusiastic dog were walking and exploring driftwood piles. On the dock the boats are on their trailers and crab pots are stacked, awaiting the official start of the commercial crab season.   MORE

People and a few dogs were enjoying the beautiful sunny day. I saw the fewest dead birds I have seen on any of my Coast Watch visits to this area. The beach was very clean and smooth.   MORE

I missed an opportunity when the sun came out late the afternoon of March 18. Due to my busy schedule and the continual intense storms since March 19, I am just over two weeks late with this spring report. Piles of wood -- from small twigs to logs and rooted stumps -- are on the upper beach above the driftline. A very strong wind last Saturday cancelled the Beach Cleanup so plastic bottles and other debris are tangled with the piles of wood. The dead birds I saw seemed to be recently dead; they had no missing parts and the bodies were in good condition except for the pelican which had been partially eaten. I'm guessing the deaths were mostly because of the intense storms.   MORE

Light activity at both Battle Rock and Dock Beach. On the dock people were busy with boats, hoisting boats, or working in the restaurant. Crab pots are stacked, awaiting the signal to start the season. Beautiful day.   MORE

The beach was extremely clean with almost no litter (1 soda pop can, 2 bottle caps). Charred wood, remainders of beach fires, were evident but had not been near piles of driftwood, so were apparently extinguished easily and completely. There was not as much natural material in the wrack lines as sometimes occurs.   MORE

This was the first time I have been to the beach since the recent tsunami. Erosion in a couple of places at the top of one beach could have been from those waters. There seemed to be more trash than usual, including a lot of pieces of broken plastic. Time for the spring beach cleanup. People were quietly enjoying the beach on this calm morning. A kayaker was just offshore.   MORE

I decided to do my quarterly walk a little early as it was a very pleasant day and low tide. Sky was partly cloudy, air and ocean quite calm. It was a good decision, because it seems as though the weather has been stormy ever since. The few people on the two beaches (Battle Rock and the Dock Beach) were quietly walking, one couple with their dog. The people on the dock were working on boats or standing in groups and talking. There is always tension until the crab season gets going. This year, so far, is not good for our local fishers who usually make most of their money during December and into the next year with the crab harvest.   MORE

On this edge-of-autumn afternoon the sea was calm, the beach quite clean with few footprints. Business-as-usual was going on at the dock (fishing boats returning for the night)and people who work at the dock were doing their jobs.   MORE

A quiet day on the dock and on the beaches. Four people were quietly enjoying the beach at the cove just west of Battle Rock. I was the only person on the dock beach. No dead birds or animals today. Several pelicans were flying, swimming, or resting on a rock near the beach.   MORE

A warm, sunny, calm day at the beach. Most of the people and all but 2 of the cars were on the dock. Crab season is in full swing and the fishers have had good weather since it started December 1. The beach was clean; no dead birds and almost no litter.   MORE

We have had rain off and on; no big storm. But, even so, the sand patterns change on the beach. As I walked the day that started with rain was changing to a warm, sunny late afternoon. Very pleasant. Large piles of bull kelp on some areas of the beach.   MORE

As I sat on a rock to watch the activity at the port, I observed one fishing vessel come in and the fish in containers were hoisted to the dock. One man had apparently just come in from kayaking. He made several trips up the ramp, unloading and transfering items to his car, the kayak last. Another man walked to the beach from the parking lot with his kayak and launched it, taking a short ride. I'm sorry I didn't have my camera. I could have photographed the kayaker going out, with a commercial fishing vessel being lowered from the dock to the water right behind him. This shows the versatility of our port. It was a good day for sea kayaking with calm water and no wind. As I walked up the hill I looked back and saw two other kayakers going out and a sport boat being hoisted up to the dock.   MORE

Little beach activity; sands mostly clean. On the pocket beach between Battle Rock and Fort Point--where the waves do not wash things away as completely as on the open beaches--there were piles of tangled grass, kelp, and pieces of wood. These might be the remains of some of the land-based debris reported earlier on our southern beaches (following heavy rains and flooding in Curry County)   MORE

A typical day at the beach and on the dock. Weather very pleasant (no wind!). The only thing unusual was the large number of jellies on the beach, flat, roughly circular, mostly brown. I counted 57, so upwards of 60, I would guess. I saw a similar situation some months ago, but could not find anything in my Coast Watch file about it.   MORE

The most unusual factor was the extreme low tide (-2.4). Usually, a lot of people are on the beach at such times, but not today. I did not find one bird carcass in my short "mile" and that seemed unusual, based on past experience. the beach was very clean, with a minimal amount of litter. Perhaps the extreme high tides of last week swept everything away. Most of the fishing boats were on their trailers on the dock; probably due to reduced fishing at this time and the low tide when they could not be launched.   MORE

Although the bird carcasses noted above were of varying ages, I think it likely that most of them were victims of the Dec. 2-3 storm. Several pelicans died in Port Orford during that storm. We have had a storm this week, too, of lesser intensity.   MORE

Little activity on the dock; the few people on the beach were there because of the low tide, I think, because you can walk around some of the headlands at very low tide.   MORE
