A gorgeous day, many people were out enjoying the beach. walking its length. Picked up an unusual and considerable amount of chunks of white styrofoam. Several small landslides have occurred this winter with continued undermining of the trees and foliage at the top of the cliffs. There have been very few birds normally seen in this area. Nine dead murres were found from 73rd Street access and to the north. A young man was seen climbing the steep and eroded cliff adjacent to the basalt outcropping at the north end of the beach.   MORE

Witnessed several people climbing to the top of "The Point" at the north end of Roads End beach. This has been an area of concern all year with a significant rise in the number of people climbing said cliff. On July 5th, rescue personnel spent nearly 4 hours rescuing 3 people from this same cliff. I have put in a request for a warning sign to be installed at the north end of Roads End beach. Sunbathers under active rock slide area at The Point an ongoing problem. Approached one group of people and found myself talking with KATU news and North Lincoln County Fire Lt. Jim Kusz who were covering the cliff rescue from the night before. As I warned them of the dangers of being under such an active slide area, rocks came tumbling down. They moved. Talked with Jim about cliff climbing problem and agreed a warning sign should be installed. While we were talking, a car came driving down the beach to pick up camping equipment left behind. Went to "greet" them and informed them that overnight camping on the beach, as well as driving on the beach, are both illegal.    MORE

Fabulous day at the tidepools at Road's End. Found several nudibranchs: an alabaster, a leopard, a red gilled, and five opalescent. Two of the opalescents were curled up in the seaweed at the edge of the pool, all the others were actively feeding. Sand is low exposing alot of rocks and pools. Some agates, and agate hunters. First time I've ever seen an oystercatcher working the beach much less within 100 feet of a human. Guillimots were pretty active on the nearshore rocky outcroppings in the first cove. Found a huge round bumper, white with the letter B on the sides (2) and a five or six digit letter/number code across the top. Left it at the north access for someone who loves having beach flotsam in their yard. Some false seapalm on the beach along with lots of plastic pieces (again!)   MORE

Increasing problem with young men climbing the large basalt headland at the north end of Roads End beach. Two other Coast Watchers have also noticed the problem. They climb up the loose gravelly side to the right of it and continue upward to the top, about 75 ft up. I remind the offenders of how dangerous it is as well as the fact that they are breaking the law but I only get harassed in return (not surprising). On March 26th I noted 3 young men climbing the headland. All were climbing in only their shorts. No shirts, no shoes. One of them had apparently fallen because he passed me on the beach very scraped up, blood dripping from his fingertips. I called 911 that day. Recently contacted Beach Ranger Dave Woody regarding problem. He said, "It appears that the property is privately owned and the issue is a matter of trespassing. The land owner would be the one to post the area for no trespassing. The Lincoln City beaches are lined with very high banks and cliffs that people like to climb and dig into, and even though it is not in my jurisdiction to cite or warn people of the rules concerning this activity I do try to warn them and ask them to come down as a matter of safety and common sense. I have in the past spotted people climbing in the area you mentioned. I usually sit on the beach and watch them in order to call for help when they get stuck or hurt. Luckily for me no one has fallen or got hurt while I was watching. Usually when they see me watching they start climbing down. I make a point of letting them know that it really is not safe to do that and please do not do it in the future." The Roads End headland, including The Point, is federally owned and probably managed by the US Forest Service.   MORE

Not as much small debris but still a great quantity and an amazing array of large debris including, but not limited to: car fender, 10 gallon gasoline container, dozens of either 6 inch or 10 inch lengths of either black or gray rubber "tubing" (not your standard tubing, I 'm not familiar with this material, it has a thick wall), large pieces of a dense styrofoam type of material, dozens of the big liter bottles and lots of bits of frayed polypro lines. Just met Walter Munk. I asked for his advice, if he had one piece of advice for humanity what would it be, "Be careful what you put in the ocean." Telling. There was also a dead fawn whose haunches, and only the haunches had both been eaten.    MORE

Beautiful day, tide coming in, with many people walking the beach. Despite the high number of dogs, for the first time it seems like all the owners were picking up! Again, so much plastic. I picked up a garbage bag full of large bits: bottles, bottle caps, line, tubing, sandals, sieves, parts of buckets, oval foam fish floats (blue and cream, about 7x4x1") and glass bottles. Again, the beach was strewn with millions of bits of plastic. A tourist remarked: "It's just getting worse, isn't it?" Another had picked up two very large, blue containers, one a rectangular box looking like a gas can. And so I thought: If we, as a society, can dispense "doggie bags" at beach entry points, why not have a dispenser with Solve bags for picking up trash?   MORE

And so it's around 9:30 Friday night and I had just gone around and turned all the lights out so I could watch the lightning. A few homes on the beach had their powerful floodlights directed at the ocean. I'm sitting on my sofa with cat in lap when I say to myself, "What the heck is that?!" In the glow of those powerful floodlights I see a large, white, vertical cloud moving from south to north along the beach. It comes ashore just a few blocks from my house! I can see the trees over there just whipping but my trees are quite still. Then, the transformer blows and all the power goes out in Roads End. When the lightning lit up the sky again, I could see chaos to the north of me. It didn't take me long to figure out that a waterspout had just come onshore. I took a look at the damage on Sunday and it is substantial. The tornado looks to have skipped around the neighborhood, hitting a house here and there, uprooting trees, breaking windows. The damage was on 74th street. I am on 70th street. Yep, it hit a little too close to home!    MORE

Found banded dead Cormorant on Roads End beach. There were 3 bands attached to the wing. All were plastic: black, blue, purple. Contacted Roy Lowe and Robert Loeffel via email. Pics attached. Per Roy, "The plastic wire ties on this bird were placed there By a COAAST volunteer as part of their study to see how low carcasses persist on the beach. These type of marking do not need to be reported and unfortunately many people remove these birds from the beach and bring them to us to report them. I knew when COAAST started this project this would happen. We appreciate and I don't want to discourage you from reporting things like this if there is any confusion. The true marking of most live birds is with individually numbered leg bands and often also numbered color leg bands. If you ever do find birds with these please photograph and retain the bird and bands and report them to me as we can obtain the data on each bird."   MORE

This winter's erosion of the uplifted basalt near the end of 245 is interesting in the effect: usually the cliff is fairly smooth, now there are spines and depressions. The bridge between the basalt and the igneous outcropping has further eroded; it may not be more than another two or three years when the rock will stand separate from the basalt from the midpoint up. The jellies were obviously only just stranded. I put a few in tidepools but they only sank to the bottom. What's the general wisdom on this type of stranding? Leave them, put them in tidepools, put them in the surfline?    MORE

The scrubbed-clean cliffs of winter (through June) have now transformed to the heavily scree-skirted cliffs. A large chunk of the rocky point fell about three weeks ago. More of the vegetated area crowning the cliffs is sliding down hill.   MORE

Only had time to walk north half of Roads End mile. Found the 2 dead sea lions (pics attached) and reported to Jim Rice and Sheridan Jones. Stopped a pickup truck on beach towing trailer with jet ski. They showed permit to be on beach and were rescuing a "dead jet ski" in the water. Picked up more broken glass.   MORE

Windswept beach but enough litter to be an eyesore. Picked up some jagged broken glass. The caves dug into the bluff at the Roads End Wayside have been filled in. "Thanks" to whoever did that!   MORE

Oceanfront home had a speaker aimed at the beach and was broadcasting the loud screeches and chatter of birds. It was not only annoying for those walking the beach but it was driving the wild birds nuts. If it's an attempt to keep birds away from their house, it's not working. Seagulls, pigeons, crows, etc. were all flying up to the speaker. Reported problem to the sheriff who said there's not much he could do about it, if it's during the daytime. Am I correct in thinking that a problem such as this could be termed "wildlife harrassment"?   MORE

It was a beautiful day at the beach! There seemed to be an unusually large amount of small plastic pieces in the wrack line - especially at the south end of mile 245. The speaker system on the house near the north end of Roads End was very annoying and I'm assuming set up to keep gulls away from the home.   MORE

There's still a lot of pulverized garbage from the big storm a week prior. No doubt a lot of it came down the rivers. Shoreline/bluff looks good, considering the battering it took. Only a couple large riprap rocks were knocked out of place. No sign of improvement regarding caves dug in bluff at Roads End Wayside.   MORE

Dozens of uprooted sea palm and bull kelp -- LARGE specimens of sea palms, 16-20" tall. The sand movement is very early this year -- lots of exposed rock.   MORE

Only concern is with the caves dug into the bluff at the Roads End Wayside. They have gotten deeper over the summer. Reported problem to the State Parks department. Dave Woody said he'd follow up.   MORE

Few birds, a couple crows and seagulls. Large gatherings of people, such as family reunions and a group of young people clustered together. At first I thought it was a religious meet, but recognized a local doctor and saw markings for a wild game of Frisbee or some team sport with a Frisbee. Few dogs, all maintained by owners. There was a small fire at the south end and when I returned I found it was in the remains of what was a huge log shelter from last summer. An "art form" had been created that looked like a beached whale from a distance. I had to inspect to see just what it was. An art by someone.   MORE

Beach was quite clean. Only sign of Velella velella (blue jellies) was during 2nd half of May. Very few washed ashore. Bluff digging still going on at Roads End Wayside. Warning sign is gone.   MORE

Fairly clean beach. I saw no dead birds or mammals. Biggest concern is the continued digging of caves in bluff at Roads End Wayside. Very curious about a small section of beach that was void of all sand from about January into February. Seemed to be due to waves coming in at an angle. Sand is back now. Section of beach was between 68th and 70th streets.   MORE

Lots of activity due to mild, sunny afternoon weather. Several carcasses were drawing a lot of interest from beachgoers. Called OSP to report. Noticed an unusual amount of small-size debris (mostly plastic) over entire beach area. Small driftwood fire was left burning.   MORE

Not a whole lot going on. The rain tends to keep a lot of people off of the beach at this time of the year. 3 stranded/dead animals found and a call was made to authority each time. I notice a lot of erosion at the cliff side of the Roads End State Park. Concern about the people who have dug holes into the side of the cliffs. I feel that it is very unstable and could come down and hurt children if they should start digging/playing in that area.   MORE

My visiting son, Mark and I walked Mile 245 today....very pleasant weather day, no wind. There were about 10 walkers, 2 dogs. Large driftwood logs on South end of mile....lots of mussel shells on North end of Mile. Clean beach as it was close to high tide. No sign of possible lumber, reported to have been washing in to our shores. Why I mention I was with my son: to verify that we saw, 4 teen age girls and one young man, all in bikini swim suits racing down and taking a swim in the ocean. Not just a dip -- they were in as far as they could go -- on Feb. 8, no less!   MORE
