Heceta Beach North of Baker Beach at the rocks below Southview Gated Community there was another landslide. I have seen many slides there but this one was so big the mud line was 18 feet high on the rocks at beach. I mean days after the slide and the ocean had removed most of the dirt. You could still see the mud plastered against a rock sticking up out of the sand 18 feet high. the rock is probably 28 feet tall. It is possible Hwy 101 could be compromised. Its worth looking at.   MORE

First visit to this mile. Very limited human use due to a long slog thru soft sand from the Baker Beach parking lot or down from Hwy 101 via a steep trail at the Southview neighborhood entrance. This section of the beach is a popular horse riding area, but none observed today. It looks like the foredunes just north of Berry Creek have been bulldozed flat for Snowy Plover habitat. No signage observed. Further north, the beachgrass-caused foredunes are very tall and steep. The north end of Mile 176 is at the rocks at the base of the bluff.   MORE

The user-maintained path to the beach from the Overlook shows signs of being pushed toward the sea. Over the past year it seems to have settled and been pushed toward the ocean by pressure from traffic on highway 101. This could be the beginning of a degrading of the fill under the road, not a good sign!   MORE

I repeat my last message: the degradation of the slopes at the north end of this mile could be catastrophic to the daily use of highway 101. Some attention should be paid to mitigation of the growing problems with the degradation of this area.   MORE

First report, no significant human damage to area, other then the horse trail over the dunes and on the land side paralleling the dunes. The amount of drifting sand appeared unusual to me, but my experience with this beach it very limited. It appears that the loose sand along the horse trail and over the dunes, and the distance to the beach from the access point discourages most visitors.   MORE
